More About Us
We’re Alex and Kay, the creative duo behind Gnefknacks Ceramics, our collaborative ceramic studio where we make playful, strange, and beautiful pieces for everyday use.
We began working together in early 2023, combining our individual ceramic backgrounds into one shared vision. What started as a fun project quickly grew into a deeper passion—and Gnefknacks was born. For us, it’s more than just a name; it represents a space where we get to explore form, color, texture, and connection—together.
Alex brings over seven years of hands-on ceramic experience, with a focus on wheel-thrown forms and a strong sense of structure and balance. He approaches each piece with intention, refining classic shapes and proportions that serve as the canvas for what’s to come. Kay completes the process with bold surface decoration, using a carving technique called “sgraffito”. By layering colorful underglazes and carefully etching through them, she brings energy, movement, and story to each form.
Every single piece we make is a true 1/1—no molds, no repeats, just thoughtful, handmade work that reflects who we are and where we are in our journey. While our pieces are intended to be used—yes, they’re microwave and dishwasher safe—they’re also made to be treasured. We want our ceramics to feel like little works of art that brighten your shelf, your table, or your daily rituals.
At the heart of Gnefknacks is our collaboration. Working together in the studio is a conversation: between us, the clay, the tools, and the ideas we’re constantly chasing. It’s a process that’s brought us closer not only as partners in art, but in life. Each piece we make is touched by both of us—Alex on the wheel, Kay with the brush and carving tool—and we think that duality is part of what makes our work feel alive.
We’re drawn to bold colors, odd shapes, playful motifs, and the kind of imperfections that remind you something was made by hand. We like to think of our work as “fun, funky, and functional.” That balance of usefulness and joy is important to us—why not drink your morning coffee from something that makes you smile?
We’re also endlessly inspired by the community around us—the other artists, makers, and collectors who value handmade work and believe in the power of creativity. Gnefknacks is our way of participating in that conversation and sharing something real and tangible in a world that often feels rushed and digital.
We’re so grateful to be on this journey and even more excited to keep growing, experimenting, and connecting with folks like you along the way.
